Nicholas Owen, legendary TV and radio broadcaster.

Nicholas Owen, the legendary journalist and broadcaster, entertained and wooed his audience at Clandon Regis Golf Club with tales of his experiences around the world during a 55-year career in the national spotlight.

The evening raised £1,000 for the end of life care charity, The Brigitte Trust.

Nicholas, who is a patron of the charity, was the royal correspondent for ITV News covering the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales, spoke to every UK prime minister since Harold MacMillan, and was also news presenter for the BBC. He also appeared in Strictly Come Dancing, getting eliminated in the first week.

He spoke for about an hour about his career, adding a few little insights into the famous people he has me; such as Margaret Thatcher was much smaller than he was expecting and “Prince Philip doesn’t suffer fools gladly,” adding: “Not a bad career for someone with less than five O-levels.”

Vanessa Smith, promotions manager at The Brigitte Trust, said: “Our free volunteer service covers the Guildford area and supports people at home at the end of life. This generous donation will help us reach out to more local people needing support at a critical time. Huge thanks to Guildford Lions and our patron Nicholas Owen for a great evening, and to all who donated raffle prizes.”

Event organiser, Bob Hackman from Guildford Lions Club, said: “The Brigitte Trust provide invaluable emotional and practical support to those in our community suffering from life threatening illnesses and we are delighted to make this donation to their funds.”
