Letter: Expulsion of Conservative Councillors is Disgraceful

Published on: 20 Jul, 2018
Updated on: 20 Jul, 2018

From Gordon Bridger

hon alderman and former Mayor of Guildford

The recent expulsion of two well established Conservative councillors, Tony Rooth and Bob McShee, because they voted against the extraordinary link with a major industrial Chinese city and complained about a wasteful £1 million or more spent on “The Village”, is quite disgraceful.

No wonder most councillors dare not criticise the Executive. Alas most of them appear to be terrified of doing so. This is the first time in many years that the Conservatives have deselected respected councillors. Why?

I hope Rooth and McShee stand as independents next year and many others too. It’s time that we had councillors who are allowed to speak for their ward and not a national political party.

The reason no political party would have me is I can think for myself and call a spade a spade, not an “earth moving implement”.

But why deselect such respected gents? I could suggest they were deselected because they had their brains connected to their hearts but that would be insulting some very dedicated members still left in the party.

It will be interesting to see who survives past May next year.

Funnily enough I was thinking of e-mailing Bob Mc Shee, to ask if he would consider standing as an Independent next May, as I could not bring myself to vote Conservative again after the way they deceived everybody last time with their ‘Conservatives say Green Belt to stay’ slogan.
