In response to: GBC Announcement on Town Centre Planning Welcomed and Criticised
I say no more road building in Guildford, no more new car parks.
We’ve spent the last 80 years in the UK building more and more roads and the end result is the same, more and more cars.
There has to be a bold alternative approach which is to encourage people out of their cars, particularly for short journey’s of 1 – 2 miles the majority of which are currently made by car.
We need improved public transport, including buses and improved bus station, plus dedicated infrastructure for cycling. We should pedestrianise the town centre and make better use of the Park & Rides out of town.
Guildford is a town blighted by motorised traffic. It’s time to take back the town from car domination and to make it people friendly.

First get rid of the through traffic.
If this is not possible, make them pay for the privilege with a congestion charge.

It is not possible as long as most development is planned for areas outside the town-centre, thereby forcing people to commute.

It is all well and good to try and ban the car from Guildford town, but until the infrastructure of public transport is elevated to the likes of London, with minimum charges for those using it, then it will only ever be a pipe dream.
When a taxi journey of four miles costs anything between £9 to £15 from Park Barn to the town centre, compared with Stockport to Manchester airport, which costs £8.50, the high cost of public transport is non feasible.

To put that into context, Stockport Station to Manchester Airport is eight miles.

Many, even most, people share these sentiments that it would be better if road traffic were curbed. What’s needed is practical solutions.
John Clare wrote hauntingly beautiful poetry. It did not slow down the industrial revolution.
