In response to: Party Politics Has No Relevance in Local Government
As much as I would, of course, admire a well respected independent councillor that works for their area tirelessly, the reality is that if we really want to properly fund social services, one councillor alone, nor one council alone, can change government policy.
A Labour government will lay the foundations for a National Care Service for England and the party will ensure there is a limit on lifetime contributions to care costs. The hope that local council simply “rocks the boat” is what I’d expect of a frustrated Tory voter looking at a shambles of a Tory government.
If you want to live in a society that works for all and looks to enrich the lives of it’s greatest asset (all of us!). Vote Guildford Labour for GBC elections 2019 so that we can influence government at all levels, positively, and specifically for our local area.
Our candidates are local residents who understand Guildford and it’s strengths and (often) long-term weaknesses. The Tories are bad on business, see Dragon article:
https://guildford-dragon.com/2018/07/20/letter-expulsion-of-conservative-councillors-is-disgraceful/
And where is our Lib Dem opposition? Are they championing our NHS:
Are they out on the streets campaigning for housing that helps our key works and beyond? No, it’s all about flyers with erroneous graphs saying how well they want you to think they are doing. The reality (source http://britainelects.com/) as of 18/7/18 is:
Lab: 39.3% (+0.4)
Con: 38.4% (-2.7)
LDem: 9.1% (+1.0)
UKIP: 5.5% (+2.2)
Grn: 3.1% (+0.1)
However, in Guildford, we wait for the luminous signs that are out at election time that gives the only sense they’re still breathing. Poor leadership and poor opposition is not a reason to be Independent, it is a reason to vote for a party who truly cares for the many and not (only) the few!

Richard Mithen is right that Independent Councillors will not change Government policy.
But then why, in this context, is he telling us about national issues as if voting Labour in Guildford is the answer?
In fact, he makes the case for Independent councillors who would keep out of national issues and concentrate on their ward and resolving Guildford’s problems.
A most welcome intervention.
