Letter: Why Isn’t the Voting Equipment We Paid For Used?

GBC councillors – still voting by a show of hands

From Martin Elliott

In response to: Borough Council Chooses the ‘Nuclear Option’ Over Committee Appointments

I have a minor question on the voting procedure.

When the council chamber was refurbished at a reported cost of £2.2 million a sophisticated system for PA, notifications, voting, etc was installed.

We all paid for the new equipment. So why is a recorded vote, using an electronic button – rather than the antiquated counting of hands – not the norm?

It would also be interesting for the meeting minutes to fully record every vote.

Or is that why the councillors don’t want it used?

A German friend once told me that German was the perfect language for modern politicians as it allows them to deliver a statement and gauge the reaction before appending “not” if it seems unfavourable.

Recorded votes at meetings appear to be conducted by polling individual councillors in order of surname. Which means those councillors with a name towards the end of the alphabet have an advantage over those at the beginning as they have more information on how others are voting.
