Nathalie at work beside the River Wey

By David Reading

Guildford artist Nathalie Scott has initiated a community project that is bringing touches of colour to the riverside walk at Friary Passage.

She has been painting scenes of the natural world on the pillars beside the river, and is inviting members of the public to come along and make their own additions to her art.

The project is part of the Guildford Festival of the Arts, which runs from Thursday, October 1, until Sunday, October 4.

It was while the festival was being planned that it was suggested there could be community involvement and with that in mind, Nathalie has been painting her series of murals with the idea that passers-by can make their own small additions.

“We thought it would be lovely for people to come along and add a little daisy or a mushroom or some other detail,” she said. “Guildford Borough Council got involved and  commissioned me to do the work. The community part of the project will take place during the festival.”

Guildford Borough Council says: “The area under the bridge was suffering from a graffiti issue, making the area feel run down. All the pillars had been vandalised but we hope the murals will make the area feel brighter and the graffiti will be much reduced in the future.”

Nathalie, who was born in Fontainebleau in central France, came to live in Surrey almost 30 years ago. She is well known as a portrait artist who has exhibited locally and nationally – including the National Portrait Gallery.

Regrettably, I fear that any additions to these artworks, will be made by the completely talentless ‘taggers’ and will in no way add to the art.

Absolutely stunning art that immediately lifts my spirits and makes me proud to show visitors around my town. Such a contrast however to the despair I feel at the mass graffiti vandalism and littering that so blight every other corner and environment of the borough.
