After the success of the Poppy Fields light show last year, Guildford Cathedral delighted young and old on the opening night of the new Star of Wonder light and sound spectacular.

The Twelve Days of Christmas in sound and light at Guildford Cathedral.

The 20-minute show transforms the huge cathedral space with a kaleidoscope of colours and shapes processing and spinning around the walls, roof and marble floor.

People even lay down to get the best of the immersive experience.

The appreciative crowd walked around savouring the show with some even lying on the marble floor to get a different view of the stars, camels and kings and to celebrate the twelve days of Christmas.

Wendy Critchlow with Herbie (8) and Fred (5) with Teddy (aged at least 35 years old) and nanny, Monica Calvo, loved the sound and light show.

“Very good, very atmospheric.” said Martin and Diana Heal who had travelled up from Andover to see the show.

Amanda Speed from Guildford was taken aback by the experience. “I really enjoyed it. At one point I actually felt dizzy with all of the doves and waves.” she said.

“Mesmerising and memorable” colours and sounds, said the Dean of Guildford Cathedral, the Very Revd Dianna Gwilliams.

The Guildford Dragon NEWS spoke to the artists, who brought both the Poppy Fields and the new Star of Wonder shows to the cathedral. Peter Walker, sculptor and artist, and David Harper, musician with BBC and Channel 4 credits to his name, have worked together as Luxmuralis on other cathedrals and public buildings around the UK and abroad.

Peter said that they have worked for months on the project. “The scale of Guildford Cathedral is so vast, it is exciting. It is a modern space, a blank canvas and we have been able to create freely.

“It’s great that the cathedral already has the wonder and the spirituality.”

The Dean of Guildford, the Very Reved Dianna Gwilliams, said: “We are so pleased to welcome the thousands of people that are coming to this event. Seeing the cathedral bathed in light and sound is both mesmerising and memorable, and a real celebration of the journey of the Wise Men.”

Star of Wonder is on at the cathedral until Saturday, January 18. You can book tickets online by clicking here or call 01483 547881.
