Many of those who replied to last week’s mystery vintage picture were spot on naming it as the tower of Guildford’s Friary Meux brewery awaiting demolition back in 1974.

It was razed to the ground by a controlled explosion – at the second attempt! The last brew of Friary ales had taken place in December 1968 and demolition of the brewery buildings began in 1973.

The first of our mystery clock photos featured the one on the horological workshop in Worplesdon Road, Stoughton – just about opposite Byrefield Road.

I think the clock was once on the Wood Street Church Mission Hall (dedicated in 1925), opposite the Royal Oak pub. Today’s St Alban’s Church was built in 1967. Can anyone add further information?

Do you know exactly where this sports pavilion was in Stoughton Barracks?

This week’s mystery photo I will say straight away shows the pavilion beside the sports field at the far end of Stoughton Barracks. The photo dates from 1933. But what I would like to know (as I have kind of forgotten) is exactly where it was.

The open space here still exists at the far end of today’s Cardwells Keep housing development. Martin Giles and I are preparing a new book in our ‘A Walk Through Time’ series, this one being based on Stoughton. We need to take a photo from the same spot today. There is a pavilion still there, but I am not sure if it is on the site of this one. Can you help?
