Guildford’s Jubilee Beacon stands ready on The Mount ready to be lit tonight following a torch light procession that will start by the Guildhall in the High Street at 9.30pm.
It will be one of over 4200 beacons that will be lit across the length and breadth of the United Kingdom and around the globe in many commonwealth countries. Some where night has already fallen, in Tonga, New Zealand and Australia, are already burning.
A beacon has even been lit onboard HMS Daring, one of the Royal Navy’s powerful new Type 45 destroyers on operations east of Suez.
The Queen is due to light the UK’s last beacon ‘The National Beacon’ at about 10.30pm at Buckingham Palace before a firework display.
According to the BBC, the Queen’s Pageantmaster, Bruno Peek, said he had been “overwhelmed” by the response to the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Beacons event.
He said: “Our aim was to light 2,012 beacons because 2,012 have never been lit before, but by the end of the night we will have over 4,000 – that’s truly amazing.
