Letter: Landlords Should Control Their Tenants

From Bernard Parke

Hon Alderman

We have now have over 1300 houses let in the Borough that do not pay council tax.

It is said that the shortfall is made up from central funds. But it is questionable if this government funding is sufficient to cover the administration costs of the Borough’s services.

Most of these homes are bought up by absentee buy-to-let landlords, many of whom live in counties thousands of miles from the UK.

There is little which is done to ensure that these tenant respect the environment in which they have made their temporary abode.

One complaint is that of them not aware of how are refuse is collected. Often we see piles of rubbish littering the streets providing opportunity for vermin to feed off it and scatter it across the streets.

Surely a simple solution would be to ensure that landlords, or their agents, police their properties to ensure that they do not cause offence to their neighbours.
