Loose Horses Cause Chaos On The A3

Horses escaped onto the A3 at Compton yesterday evening (October 15). Members of the public joined police to help round them up.

Officers were alerted to the incident at 5.35pm following a number of reports from members of the public that a group of horses were loose on the southbound carriageway of the A3 near the A31 junction.

Down Lane was closed and traffic was temporarily halted on both carriageways of the A3 while officers and members of the public rounded up the horses into the garden of a nearby house.

Following further enquiries to determine where the horses had escaped from, the owner was identified and the horses were back in their field and safely contained by 6-35pm, with the roads reopened shortly afterwards.

A Surrey Police spokesman said: “Numerous members of the public stopped and helped us round the horses up and although we would not want anyone to put themselves in danger, we would like to thank them for their assistance. Without their help and expertise, we would have really struggled to get the horses back into their field.”
