Eat inside or out at this spacious café within Guildford’s Yvonne Arnaud Theatre beside the River Wey.
Judging by the amount of people enjoying a drink and a snack here when we visited at about midday on a Thursday, it’s a popular place. However, along with the outside seating on the terrace (weather permitting) you should be able to bag a table with ease.
It offers a good selection of coffees, teas and other drinks, as one would imagine. Food wise, there was a nice selection of home-made cakes to go with our late-morning coffees. But others there were already tucking into the lunchtime specials – such as roast chicken (£8.95), soups (£3.95), quiches (£7.95).
A sign on the wall behind the counter reads: “food with thought”, and that’s a pretty good way of summing it up.
The café is just off the foyer, and also the place where theatregoers can gather before it’s time to enter the auditorium. But you don’t have to be going to a show to eat and drink here.
The inside eating area is within a curved space – all characteristic of this piece of 1960s architecture. On the terrace the tables are arranged on brick paving. And there’s a good deal of greenery growing all around – perhaps a bit too much, obscuring what might be extra views of the river scene beside. But don’t let that put you off.
Overall, we enjoyed the coffees and the cakes, and it goes without saying there’s a good vibe and relaxed feel about the place.

I’ve always found the food at the Yvonne Arnaud acceptable but uninspired. However, in my opinion the new caterers Caper & Berry have revolutionised eating here. The food now has flavour, flair and excitement worthy of the venue – for example the beetroot and butternut squash soup is delicious.
