Looking for a Christmas tipple with a difference?
If gin is to your taste and you fancy something that’s produced really close to Guildford, a trip to the Silent Pool Distillers shop may be worth considering.
Based near Albury, it specialises in hand-crafted sprits using organic fruits, spices and herbs.
It boldly claims that its aim is to “capture the essence of the Surrey Hills area of outstanding natural beauty and the bounty of English orchards, gardens and hedgerows”.
The distillery won the Surrey Life Food and Drink Innovation Award 2015, and has just created another very special gin – Toujours 21, to celebrate the 21st birthday of Eurostar.
Toujours 21 is the result of a creative partnership between Raymond Blanc OBE and Cory Mason, Silent Pool’s master distiller.
The aim was to evoke Eurostar’s “heritage, reminiscent of both British and French cultures. The bespoke gin is the perfect way to commemorate the anniversary”.
“It’s been an incredible experience working with Raymond Bland,” said Cory Mason. “We talked the same language.”
“We used English lavender and took the exact flavour note that we wanted. We used both the seed and the root of the angelica which gave a delicate floral back note.”
Travellers eager to sample Toujours 21 can do so in the Eurostar business premier lounges in London, Paris and Brussels, where it will has been launched as part of the drinks offering.
It can also be bought online.
And for gin lovers and those who are plain gin curious, you can visit the distillery for a 90-minute tour, where one of the distillers reveals how this award-winning gin is made, what exactly goes into it and why.
There is also the opportunity to taste some of the various stages in production and some of the other spirits being produced.
The shop opens on weekdays from 9am to 5pm, Saturdays 10am to 4pm and on Sundays from 10am to 3pm. Click here to view the website.

Great gin, great story and great people. This has the potential to run and run beyond the current fad with small craft distillers.
