East Horsley WI began the new year with plans for outings to celebrate its 50th anniversary.
They then enjoyed an excellent illustrated talk from Elaine Burns, the chairman of The Nomads, East Horsley’s much loved local theatre group.
The talk traced the history of the group which was founded in 1934 by Donald Chown, son of Frank Chown, builder of “Chown” houses in East Horsley.
At first the group met in many locations, hence the name, and sometimes used the original hall belonging to the East Horsley Afternoon WI.
The first theatre was built in 1956 and replaced in 1997 with the present theatre. The company has an excellent reputation for the quality of its productions and for the opportunities and training given to youngsters.
The WI Resolutions were then discussed and the one concerning the avoidance of food waste and food poverty by encouraging supermarkets to give surplus food to charities, received the most support.
There will be a new year’s lunch and a bridge afternoon before the next meeting in East Horsley Village Hall at 8pm on Wednesday, February 17, which jncludes a talk by the well known local historian David Rose on Guildford’s Lost Shops.
New members and visitors are always welcome. Other activities and outings include craft sessions, bridge and rummikub, walks and visits to museums, theatres and galleries. For more details ring 01483 285145.
