University of SurreyThe University of Surrey has received the highest number of UCAS applications from would-be students in its history, a 24% increase on last year.

The university says: “It’s strong performance bucks the trend of the broader higher education sector, which has seen application growth stay relatively flat over the past 12 months.”

It reports that the top five undergraduate degrees with the sharpest rise in applications since last year are: English (74%), economics (66%), business (62%), computer science (58%) and biochemical sciences (57%).

Applications for post-graduate degrees have also increased, having risen 65% since this time last year.

Dr David Ashton, vice-president and registrar at the university said: “This record year for the university is underpinned by the strength of our academic programme, our exceptional rate of graduate employability and the satisfaction of our students.

“It follows four consecutive years of growth and enables us to raise both the quality and intake of our students.

“We have invested considerably in our teaching and research offering over the past year, having launched a world-leading 5G Innovation Centre, opened a new School of Veterinary Medicine and begun building a £10 million Engineering for Health Learning Laboratory, due to open later this year.

“This latest rise in applications for degrees such as computer science and biochemical engineering suggests we have made the right decision and are attracting students with an appetite to study innovative courses in cutting edge facilities.”

It has been named University of the Year by the Times and Sunday Times, both overall and for ‘student experience’ and achieved a top 10 ranking in all three major national university league tables.
