Sandfield Primary School pupils and their parents had a surprise waiting for them when they received a letter on what should have been the start of the school’s Summer term on Monday.
Instead of attending assembly, the 210 pupils watched their teachers on YouTube giving a spirited rendition of S-Club 7’s ‘Reach For The Stars‘.
Head teacher, Kate Collins told The Guildford Dragon NEWS, that they were trying to find ways of connecting with the Sandfield pupils and families during the lockdown.
She said: “This song has become something of an anthem for Sandfield School and means a lot to us.
“We know the children at Sandfield are really missing school life, as do we, so we wanted to remind them to believe in themselves and take heart from the fact that we are with them every step of the way.
“The feedback has been astounding with nearly 1,300 views on YouTube.”
Even though the children can’t attend the Stoke Road school in Guildford, part of the Guildford Education Partnership (GEP Academies), school work is continuing online.
“We set the children three tasks they can do by themselves and there is support. 90% of the pupils are accessing the online work and those that aren’t are being encouraged by the school with telephone calls and equipment.”
Regarding media reports that schools may return at the beginning of June, Ms Collins said: “We don’t know when we will be going back but it will be great to see the pupils again.”
