PKF Experience participant, Mira Guha

The Guildford office of leading accountancy firm PKF recently ran one of its popular ‘PKF Experience’ work experience weeks.  The PKF Experience is a five-day programme that aims to give those involved a true taste of what an accountancy career can offer, through interactive sessions and business games as well as and advice on presentation skills, teamwork, CV writing and interview techniques.

Claire Dee interviewed one of the participants for The Guildford Dragon News to find out more…

Mira Guha, 18, from Ripley, is currently studying at Guildford High School.

I found out about the PKF Experience week though my school and was interested in attending to learn more about a career in accounting and PKF.

I am keen to work in the accountancy profession as I have a combined interest in mathematics and business.  Accountants will always be in demand and accountancy appeals to me because it is always changing and there is so much variety.  PKF is well known outside of the main ‘Big Four’ accountancy firms and I wanted to learn more about them and how their approach to clients is more tailored.

There is so much I have taken away from the PKF Experience week, including a better understanding of the entry routes into an accounting career and the different course options available.  I was given a very clear idea on each course structure – for example for AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) or ICEAW (Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales).  I also found shadowing current employees extremely useful as it gave me the opportunity to witness first-hand what an accounting profession entails and allowed me to personally gain advice about my future career path into this field.

The week also taught me skills in conducting individual and group presentations to time, alongside practising mock interviews and online tests.

As a result of the PKF Experience week, I now know that an accounting career is for me.  I have a broader understanding of the different sectors in accountancy and feel better equipped to make my career decision.  In particular, PKF has made me think about my entry path to accounting and if going through the AAT route would be more beneficial than taking a degree.

I would definitely recommend the PKF Experience week to others because it taught me a lot and was enjoyable and rewarding.  The tasks were structured in such a way that we all learnt something about careers in accounting and in some cases, about ourselves, and the talks were informative helping us to make future decisions knowing all the facts.
