The concept store Anthropologie has confirmed it is opening its first new store in over a year in Guildford. This confirms rumours first reported in the the Guildford Dragon NEWS earlier this week.
The brand is in the first stages of refitting 149 High Street, a space previously occupied by Habitat, and hopes to open by October.
Anthropologie’s Alice Sykes said: “We’ve been looking to open a new store in the UK and Guildford has provided the perfect storm: a beautiful building, good location and close to our online customer base.”
Ms Sykes explained that the company do not advertise so brand awareness is by word of mouth. Internet shopping statistics revealed that many of their customers live in Hampshire, Surrey and SW London, so Guildford was an obvious choice.
The store is proud of its innovative image. When the Edinburgh shop was renovated local artists took part in a competition to paint the hoardings. The chosen design was replicated on items available to purchase in-store.
The news comes on the back of a report predicting that high streets like Guildford would survive the recession.
