Arthur Miller’s celebrated play, All My Sons, will be staged by the Guildburys Theatre Company at the Electric Theatre in Guildford next week.
The play will show at 7:45pm from Wednesday to Saturday, April 11 to 14.
The play centres on a suburban American family in the years immediately after the Second World War. It deals with post-war grief and the guilt of profiting from the business opportunities of war.
Director Robert Sheppard said: “All My Sons is a hard-hitting play by one of the greatest playwrights of the twentieth century. It has a raw writing style that generates waves of emotion – a real challenge for the actors.
“Above all, this is a fascinating story of a family hiding truths, themes which resonate today, and an honest and sometimes brutal examination of the hopes and flaws associated with the American dream.”
Guildburys Theatre Company was founded in 1963 by young amateur actors. The company performs mainly in Surrey, but has also performed at the Edinburgh fringe and at Minack Theatre, an open air cliffside theatre in Cornwall. The name is a portmanteau of Guildford and Albury.
The first run of All My Sons took place 70 years ago, between January 29, 1947, and November 8, 1949, and was Arthur Miller’s first successful play.
Its criticism of American society and the American Dream was one reason why Miller was questioned by Joseph McCarthy’s House Un-American Activities Committee during the anti-communist ‘Red Scare’ of the 1950s.
