Ben’s Collectors Records is presenting a tribute event for Tubby Hayes, British jazz’s forgotten genius at the Guildford Institute, Ward Street, GU1 4LH on Friday, March 3 at 7:30pm.
Tubby Hayes played tenor sax with the greats including Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald and Ronnie Scott as well as in his own bands.
With a string of albums, film credits and even his own television series to his name, Tubby fell to the jazz artist’s down-spirally habit of booze and heroin. He died at the desperately early age of 38 and was cremated in the north London cemetery in Golders Green.
The tribute will be led by The Simon Spillett Quartet (Simon on tenor sax, Dave Green on double bass, John Critchenson on piano and Spike Wells) playing a live set of Tubby’s music.
This will be followed by Mark Baxter presenting his highly acclaimed documentary Tubby Hayes; A Man In A Hurry.
In 2015, a full-length biography, The Long Shadow of The Little Giant: The Life, Work and Legacy of Tubby Hayes by Simon Spillett was published by Equinox Publishing Ltd. The book became a best-seller, receiving widespread praise in both the specialist and non-specialist press and was nominated among the top books of 2015 by The Guardian.
Tickets are on sale for £15 at Ben’s Collectors Records, 5 Tunsgate, GU1 3QT. Contact Ben on 01483 301165.
