Bike Theft Is This Week’s Local Crime Trend

This week’s “crime trend” in Guildford is bike theft, according to Surrey & Sussex Neighbourhood Watch.

They are asking their co-ordinators to spread the word to residents who own bikes, highlighting the issue of bike security.

The message from Immobilise, the property register website

Their circular states: “Just because a bike is not visible from the road does not mean it is safe from thieves.

“Guildford police have been given suspicious activity information from neighbourhood watchers this last week who have seen young persons, sometimes in hoodies, taking a strong interest as to what is in parked vans and gardens etc.

“These types of persons will also be watching on the road where bike owners are taking their bikes, especially once arriving at home.”

The message ends somewhat pessimistically, “Please also note that investigating bike theft is not a police high priority.”

I had my bike stolen from my garden shed twice, even though you can’t access my shed directly from our road.

Since then, I keep our bikes locked with heavy duty locks, and have an alarm in the shed.

I also have a solar-powered security light on the shed and keep the shed locked with a lock at ankle height.
