Shortly before 6pm this evening, (Tuesday, May 28) officers were called to the River Wey near the Row Barge pub in Stoke  by ambulance crews, following reports of a concern for safety.

Members of the public reported that a man had dived into the river but had not resurfaced.

Sadly, a man’s body has been recovered from the river. The man has not been formally identified, although the police said in a press release: “We know who he is and have informed his family.”

A large emergency services presence attended the scene including Surrey Police, Surrey Fire and Rescue, South East Coast Ambulance Service, a dive team and search and rescue. We would ask that members of the public avoid the area to allow emergency services to conduct their enquiries.

A police spokesperson said: “We are treating the death as unexplained, but do not believe at this stage that there was anyone else involved. A file will be prepared and passed to the coroner.”
