Castle Green Bowling Club, report by social secretary Shirley West
Castle Green Bowls Club enjoyed a fun packed afternoon celebrating the forthcoming royal wedding with a bowls drive.
All dressed in red, white and blue, we really entertained the packed Castle Grounds. The band in the band stand was fantastic and the weather was just lovely.
If you are interested in playing bowls, we meet ever Monday and Thursday at 6.15pm. Pop in and meet us, we a really friendly club.
Burpham Bowling Club, report by Ian Mackrell
Although the brief summer weather didn’t last, Burpham continue their wonderful start to the 2018 season.
Our star player from Zimbabwe, Eric Isherwood, looks pleased – and the bowls nearest the jack aren’t even his!
On Tuesday, May 8, we hosted Ripley in the Guildford, Woking & District League, and won 40-34.
We travelled to East Horsley on Wednesday, May 9, for a friendly game of three triples. However, the host club could only muster four players! Burpham made up numbers, a game was played on a reasonable green, and, once again, Burpham bettered the opposition in what turned out to be just a bit of fun.
After the match Vera offered everyone a well deserved cup of tea and some fantastic, home-made cakes. At least East Horsley are good hosts, but the shortage of players is concerning.
The following day, Thursday May 10, we travelled to Chertsey for the Knaphill Triples League.
Alan Mogg had a resounding victory on his rink, with superb help from Linda Macbeth and Nina Challens.
On the later’s husbands rink, things were more tense. Peter Challens, and his team of Barry Macbeth and Ian Mackrell, finally succeeded in beating their opponents in a tight match. The overall score was 48-24, giving us a maximum points score of 3-0.
The pinnacle of the week came on Saturday, May 12, our first match in the West Surrey League and Sapphire League. Some 38 players had made themselves available for a 21- player squad.
Travelling to Byfleet with 12 men for the match, and with nine ladies for their Sapphire League, the heavens opened – in any other sport, play would have been abandoned, but not in bowls!
The weather challenged both our sanity, and ability. (Those that were not selected and stayed at home in the dry and warm, must have gloated!)
Our ladies had an extremely tight match, with one rink drawing 14-14 and one going down by one shot on the final end. However, with a total final score of 47-50, Burpham had to concede the Byfleet ladies had just pipped them.
