Furniture retailer Barker and Stonehouse is continuing its expansion into the South East, unveiling its next store in Guildford over the Christmas holiday.
Opening its doors to the public on December 26, Boxing Day, the new Guildford store is the brand’s 11th location in the UK.
With an investment of £10m, the Guildford store will be located at Ladymead, on the site that was once home to the Guildford Fire Station.
According to a press release: “It was during the Second World War that the two founders, RAF men, Charles Barker and Alex Stonehouse, decided to embark on their own personal fight to succeed in business when they returned to Civvy Street, opening the first Barker & Stonehouse store in Bishopton Lane, Stockton, in early 1946. Since then, the business has continued to grow and today it is run by the third generation of the Barker family.”
Offering 42,000 sq ft of retail space across two floors, the Guildford store, they say, will boast dramatic architecture, imaginative room sets and visual displays of their furniture and accessories. It will also create 25 jobs for the local area.
Two interactive 82-inch screens as well as two totems for perusing the full collection of Barker and Stonehouse homewares online will be installed. Visitors will also have the chance to use the on-site Queensbury Coffee House.
As the UK’s largest retailer of reclaimed furniture, Barker and Stonehouse says it is mindful of its impact on the environment. So nearly 20% of all dining and bedroom ranges are made from reclaimed materials, they claim to work hard to launch stores that are not only environmentally friendly but also energy saving.
The Guildford store, they say, will be no exception to this rule, thanks to its mix of energy-saving lighting and thermal insulation that has been incorporated throughout the building’s construction. For the past 10 years, Barker and Stonehouse has also offered a recycling service, removing all packaging and ensuring that 98% of all waste material is recycled.
Barker and Stonehouse Managing Director James Barker commented on the company’s expansion: “We are thrilled to be opening our 11th Barker and Stonehouse store in Guildford, making this our second south-east store to open this year.
“Surrey is the ideal location for Barker and Stonehouse. Thanks to an already thriving community and a calendar of local events, we look forward to becoming part of Guildford’s cultural landscape.
“Opening our doors on Boxing Day, we welcome everyone in Guildford and the surrounding areas to come in and discover what truly makes a house a Barker and Stonehouse.”

Ummm… why is there a roundabout in the middle of Stoke Crossroads? Surely not an out-of-date plan used?
