Roads into Ripley were closed today (July 3, 2019) as part of a scene of crime investigation following what police say was an attempted theft of an ATM at the Co-op in Ripley High Street.

An army bomb disposal “wheelbarrow” approaches the ATM at the Co-op in Ripley High Street, where the incident took place.

An army bomb disposal team was in attendance because of the risk of substances left at the scene by those attempting the theft.

A police spokesperson said: “We are currently in High Street, Ripley following the attempted theft of an ATM last night.

“Due to the methods known to be used to steal ATMs a cordon is currently in place to ensure that the public is safe. Specialist officers are on route to the scene to assist. We will provide a further update once the cordon has been lifted.”

A police motorcycle was part of the cordon about a mile distant from the village centre.

One reader has reported that one man was evacuated from premises at around 1pm and at 2.45pm the same reader reported that there were signs that the police operation was “wrapping up”.

Police are also appealing for witnesses following a break-in a few miles away at Treacle Art, Middle Street, Shere, which occurred this morning (July 3, 2019) at 4:17am.

Officers are appealing for anyone who was in the area or who may have dash cam footage from that time to get in touch.

Anyone with information should contact Surrey Police by calling 101 and quote the reference number 45190066471.
