East Horsley WI is having a busy summer as its celebrate its 50th anniversary with events including a special birthday celebration lunch at the Oatlands Park Hotel, Weybridge.
The WI continues to thrive with an increasing membership and a wide range of activities.
Activities have included a visit to the very clever and entertaining production of The Thirty Nine Steps at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre.
In May, the resolutions for this year were discussed and a plant sale was held.
Early in June members who had been making “twiddlemuffs” (items for use by patients with dementia) presented them to Broome Park Nursing Home at Betchworth.
In April members enjoyed a presentation by Marsha Hall titled Move over Jimmy Choo.
Marsha is a local footwear designer.
The June meeting included a presentation by David Carter and Andrew Withers – volunteers for Mercy Ships.
This is an international Christian charity whose volunteers give their services free and cover all their own costs.
The majority of the volunteers from 35 nations are Christians but people of all faiths or none are welcome.
Retired ocean liners and ferries are transformed into floating hospitals. The current ship Africa Mercy was brought into service in 2007.
The ship is fully equipped with five operating theatres, intensive care units and recovery wards.
It is presently docked at Madagascar for sixmonths and is then sailing to Benin.
A wide range of problems are treated including tumours, cleft lip and palate, cataracts, bowed legs and fistulas repairs.
WI members saw very moving images of patients before and after treatment. All treatment is free.
The next meeting will be on Wednesday, July 20, in East Horsley Village Hall and includes a talk titled The City Livery Companies, by Jo Mabbutt.
Visitors and new members are always welcome. For more details call 01483 285145.
