Can You Name The Schools These Pupils Attended?

Can anyone put a name to the school(s) these pupils attended when their photographs were taken?

Reader Gill Cole emailed The Guildford Dragon NEWS these two photos, one of which has the names of the pupils written on the back.

She writes: “While looking through a box of old family photos I found these pictures of Guidford school children from long ago.

“My aunt, Miss Dorothy Parsons, lived and worked in Guildford all her life, and is the teacher pictured in these photos.

This school photograph possibly dates from around the 1930s. Does anyone look familiar? Click on images to enlarge in a new window.

“She was born in 1899, so would have qualified as a teacher in about 1919. There is no date on either photo, but my guess is that the earlier picture was taken around 1930 or before.

Likely to be from the 1950s and possibly Bellfields School (see below).

The names that are written on the back of the photo.

“The other photo looks to me to be from the 1950s, although that may not be a good guess!

“I thought your readers might enjoy seeing these old photos and could
perhaps identify themselves or their relatives. I should be interested
to know which schools are pictured here, and any feedback you might get from your readers.”

David Rose adds: As soon as I looked at the names on the back of the latter photo I saw my cousin Colin Kings is listed. I instantly recognised him as I have a good collection of family photos from the 1950s and 60s. Colin’s dad, Robert, was my mum’s brother.

My uncle and aunt (Joan) and their three children, Colin, Peter and Elizabeth, lived at 101 Woking Road, Guildford. Therefore, the school pictured may be Bellfields School.

If you have and details to add, please leave a reply in the box below.

The photo is Bellfields Junior School and from the 1950s. One of the children, No 9, is Malcolm Frost, my little brother. No 11 is Peter Wright and Catherine Brooker, on the grass, were our neighbours.

Incidentally, I was a friend of Peter “Pete” Kings and spent many a Sunday afternoon at 101 Woking Road listening to music.

I was at Bellfields school and I think this is probably the year either one or two years older than me.

I don’t recognise Miss Parsons but the head teacher is Mr Wilkins.

I recognise the names of some of the children: Derek Bryant – the Bryant Family lived next door to us in Bellfields Road; tThere was a Poulter family in Bellfields Road (younger sister Phyllis) and another in Mangles Road (younger brother Joey); Ella Messenger’s family ran the butcher’s shop in Bellfields Road and lived above the shop for many years, the shop is still there having been through several changes of use and ownership; Linda Hook’s grandparents lived in Bellfields Road; Maureen Stent lived on the corner of Bellfields Road and Parsons Road; Doris Wheadon’s grandmother / aunt? lived in Bellfields Road.

    Hope this is helpful.
