Car park charges have risen in some Guildford car parks despite claims in a Conservative party election newsletter.
A notice displayed at a car park off Guildford Park Avenue informs motorists that the price increase took effect on April 1st.
A claim that parking charges had been frozen appeared in the Conservatives InTouch newsletter circulated before the elections on May 7th.
Bernard Parke, an Hon Alderman and former Guildford Mayor, said: “I notice that despite this claim, parking charges have been increased from the 1st April and the ticket machines have been adjusted accordingly.
“It would seem that any freeze was very short-lived and a thaw has already set in.
“I tried to get an response from council officers but have received no reply.”
Cllr Matt Furniss (Con, Christchurch), the lead member for car-parks, responded to The Guildford Dragon NEWS writing: “It [the claim] applies to the short stay carparks which charges have been frozen in Guildford. Long Stay carparks have had a small increase only.”
Guildford Borough Council remains under Conservative control following the local election on May 7th in which they won 35 of the 48 seats.

Somebody has to pay for all those consultants and their reports.
Elsewhere Ben Darnton in Tunsgate appeals to Anne Milton for a lowering of business rates. He mentions excessive car park charges and increasing rents. Tough on small businesses.
Think back to how many of them we have lost in the High Street and Upper High Street alone.
