Claire’s Column – Summer Fun

In this regular column – a must-read for all those interested in Guildford business – Claire Dee takes a light-hearted look at the summer silly season.

August arrives and with it the summer silly season.

By that, I mean when the media is full of rather bizarre news stories which wouldn’t usually make the cut. Why? Because there’s fewer ‘hard’ news stories around given parliament is now in recess and half the country is on holiday.

For example, a quick online UK news search gives me the heatwave that’s been and gone and come back again, thieves stealing sharks, police chasing cows, and ITV2’s Love Island, Love Island and more Love Island… Ordinarily, these would not be top stories.

A similar search for Surrey news is more promising with Surrey Police statistics and the RideLondon-Surrey cycle race. And Guildford news brings fairly standard stories covering council issues, lost and found, local events, and, of course, transport disruption.

The world is a lot smaller now so global activity helps fill the news agenda gaps too. As do the many social media trends – see #summer for just about everything you can think of!

And businesses can always be relied upon to produce worthwhile reads for those of us not sunning ourselves in Spain. Including survey findings, reports, reviews, people moves and new appointments.

If you are away for August then good for you and enjoy! And if you’re not, go with the flow and soak up the lighter side of the news before everyone returns for serious September.
