Over the next five days, Guildford hovers over a political knife-edge in the most important General Election in living memory.
While nationally the Tories are still 10% ahead of Labour, Delta Poll UK’s five-day Guildford study, ending December 2, shows the Lib Dems on 41%, the Conservatives on 40%, Labour on 11% and Independent Anne Milton on 7%.
The poll reflects the results of the earlier Dragon and YouGov polls, and the larger sample size of 501 voters reduces the error rate. But it is still only an opinion poll in a period of unprecedented political volatility. Nothing can be taken for granted.
But the result appears to show claims we have anything other than a two-horse race are hard to believe. The two nags are galloping, as best they can, neck and neck into the final furlong.
And the also-rans might still have an influence. The size of the votes for Labour and Anne Milton could yet be critical. Will Labour’s be squeezed further despite pleas for supporters not to vote tactically for the Lib Dems and against Brexit and the Tories?
Anne Milton, “delighted” with the warm words of support last week from former Conservative prime minister Sir John Major, pulled no punches, telling The Guildford Dragon: “I have great respect for Sir John. As a prime minister, he fought for what was best for the country, despite being continuously undermined by many of his colleagues we now see at the top of today’s Conservative Party.”
But despite more Ms Milton posters appearing in Cranleigh, will her supporters, at the moment of decision, remain faithful if that could allow Jeremy Corbyn into Number 10?
We will all know very soon, and The Guildford Dragon NEWS team will be there at the count to report the results and the reactions for you.

On top of this, today’s Observer highlights Guildford as being one of 50 seats in the country which could decide the election.
They also advocate a Lib Dem vote to beat the Conservatives in Guildford:

So, John Major was undermined, was he? Anne Milton has done a fair bit of undermining herself.

It’s a bit rich of Anne Milton to make the claim she does about John Major being “undermined” by his colleagues. They were doing exactly what she did earlier this year.
Opponents had long fought against his policy of transferring away UK sovereignty at Maastricht and refusing to consult the people or accept any argument. When a few of them voted against him, he immediately withdrew the whip (no warnings or second chances), only readmitting them when it was shown that they enjoyed a lot more support than he did.
It didn’t help him to relent, his party was trashed at the next election, losing more than 5 million votes or 37% of support. He narrowly avoided the embarrassment of a highly critical report into accusations of “sleaze” in his government when he prorogued Parliament before it was published.
Of course, the loss of support also probably had something to do with Major’s genuinely catastrophic losses during the ERM debacle.
Not a man universally admired, I think.

Talking about undermining and betraying, just think about what the turncoat John Major did to our greatest PM? His behaviour then will never be forgiven.
I suggest that he and his opinions should be treated with the contempt that they deserve.

Sadly, a vote for the Lib Dems is a vote for Corbyn.
For the sake of our nation and people we need to vote for our local Conservative candidate.

I’m not sure that a vote for Lib Dems will be a vote for Corbyn. Surely it will just mean that the Conservatives will not be able to do anything they like without being answerable to Parliament and the majority of the population who won’t be voting for them.

This approach will only escalate and end up costing the country even more by delaying tactics. The NHS too will not be sorted out with these kind of tactics. Legal cases to to block the Government will also cost the taxpayer even more.

Anne Milton acted with integrity. Isn’t that more honourable than slavishly supporting one’s party whatever it does?
