Surrey Smashers players Gabby Adcock and Chris Langridge secured their first medals of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games on Monday evening as England took silver in the mixed team event.
A closely fought gold medal match against Malaysia saw defeat for England, who were in search of their first team gold since Manchester 2002.
World number 5 Gabby Adcock opened the fixture in the first rubber with husband and doubles partner Chris Adcock, taking a 2-0 win to give England the perfect start. But defeats in the men’s and women’s singles and men’s doubles rubbers handed the win to Malaysia, leaving England to settle for silver.
Epsom-born Chris Langridge didn’t feature for England in the final, but played a significant part in the pool and knock-out rounds of the competition and will also play for Surrey Smashers next season.
With the individual and doubles events still to come, Badminton England’s target of three Commonwealth medals is still within their sights.
Surrey Smashers will form part of the brand new National Badminton League (NBL) kicking off this October- the first ever professional badminton league in the UK. With a host of international stars within their ranks, including Gabby and Chris, Surrey will be challenging for top spot alongside five other regional franchise clubs.
