A Conservative candidate to fight for the Stoughton Ward in the forthcoming Borough by-election on May 2nd has been selected. She is Sharon Stokes.
The by-election has been called following the resignation of Lib Dem Cllr Wendy May who is moving back to Canada with her family.
Ms Stokes’s family first moved to Stoughton when she was seven years old. Since then she has lived in Guildford for most of her life including residence in Stoughton for the last 10 years. She works locally in the centre of Guildford and has previously stood for election in Stoughton at the last Borough Elections in 2011.
Sharon said: “I’m delighted to have been selected to stand for election in Stoughton, an area I know so well. I’m looking forward to working closely with residents to ensure I truly represent their views on local matters.”
Deputy Chairman of the Guildford Conservative Association Cllr Christian Holliday said: “Stoughton was a Conservative-held seat in the not too distant past and we would very much like to win it back on 2nd May. Given the narrowness of the result in 2011 there is everything to play for.”
At the last poll in 2011 208 votes separated the lowest polling Lib Dem candidate and the highest polling Conservative candidate.

Liberal/Lib Dems have held two of the three Stoughton seats since 1979 and all three have been Lib/Dem seats since 1987, when Ralph Jordan was defeated. Isn’t going back to 1979 not too distant?
