Land for saleNineteen ‘parcels’ of land will be sold of by Guildford Borough Council, it was agreed at a council meeting last night (April 25).

The decision follows an asset review of land where a garden or grazing agreement exists. The council intends to sell the assets by auction.

Each piece of land allocated for garden or grazing use that the council owns was assessed to see if it should remain part of the land holdings, whether it should be improved, found an alternative use, transferred or sold. Council officers carrying out the review also considered the land’s strategic value, its planning status and the amount of any income derived from it.

There were 82 such pieces of land and it was agreed that 20 will be retained, 28 retained subject to further review, 19 should be sold and no action to be carried out on the remaining 15.

The question remains as to why this could not have been done in order to prevent the need for a Council Tax Rise in Guildford.

Given that the National Government has made it possible for councils to freeze Council Tax, the rise is additionally bitter when it is discovered so much land is held in reserves.
