Thieves broke into the address in Ash Street, Ash, sometime between 1am and 7am on Saturday (April 20) and stole the keys to a white Peugeot Boxer van and a silver Seat Leon which were parked on the driveway. The vehicles have not yet been recovered.
A laptop computer and mobile phone were also stolen from the address. Surrey Police is now appealing for witnesses and warning residents in the Ash and Guildford area to keep their car keys out of sight.
Detective Sergeant Blaine Rafferty, who is investigating the incident, said: “On this occasion the offenders have gained access to the premises and stolen the keys to two vehicles from inside the house before driving off.
“Most thieves are opportunistic and if a burglar can see your car keys on display they know they can be in and out of the property and driving away in your vehicle in a short space of time. By having to search for the keys, the offender is putting themselves at more risk of being caught and knows that their search may be fruitless. On the balance of probabilities they may just decide that it isn’t worth it.
“Crime prevention need not be costly or time consuming but the consequences of not securing your home or vehicle could be.
“Just taking the few minutes to check all your doors and windows are closed and locked may be all it takes to put a prospective burglar off and save you the hours and heartache of having to try and claim for and replace stolen property.”
If you have any information about this incident, contact DS Rafferty at Surrey Police on 101, quoting crime reference number GD/13/3146 or if you prefer not to leave your name, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
