People out shopping in Guildford this week have come face to face with a giant shark – but there was nothing to be afraid of.
Thankfully, it was only a costume with a real person inside – a member of Trading Standards’ England Illegal Money Lending Team. They have teamed up with community safety wardens in the Stoke and Westborough wards and have been handing out leaflets and giving advice warning people about loan sharks – otherwise known as illegal money lenders.
On Monday they were at the Pond Meadow shops in Park Barn, on Tuesday at Guildford’s main Tesco store, and on Wednesday dropped into the North Guildford Food Bank held at St Clare’s Church in Park Barn.
On Thursday, August 15, they will be at the shops on Aldershot Road, Westborough, from 11am onwards, and also at Tesco.
The team has manned at stand at Guildford Borough Council’s offices at Millmead. Also on its agenda has been visits to the CHIPS summer play scheme and the Guildford Children’s Centre in Bellfields, to talk to parents; and visits to social clubs and pubs, pharmacies and GP surgeries in the north Guildford area.

I was pleased to be out with the ‘Stop-loan-sharks’ team today in Slyfield and Bellfields. All the shops, businesses and pub we visited were happy to take leaflets and to put up posters.
Highlighting the dangers of borrowing from unlicensed lenders is crucial to public education on money management.
I urge anyone with money worries or who is being harassed by loan sharks to contact the confidential help line 0300 555 222 or go to CAB (citizen’s Advice Bureau).
