The Dragon is inviting a selection of backbench borough councillors from across the political spectrum for interview. We thought it would be a good idea to hear from some of the councillors who don’t sit on the Executive and who get less exposure.
Second to talk to Dragon editor Martin Giles is Liberal Democrat Will Salmon, one of the 2019 intake of new councillors. He represents Onslow ward.
He describes his motivation for getting involved in local politics, the learning curve he and other new councillors face and how he balances his full-time job with his councillor work and family life.
Will is asked to explain the Lib Dem stance on the Local Plan and his view of the recent shock defection to the Conservatives of a leading member of his group, Jan Harwood.

Great interview and I totally agree with Will Salmon’s comments about how important local reporting is.
Good to see The Dragon running these interviews with our councillors and raising awareness of who they are and what they are doing for us.

A most insightful interview, and Will Salmon comes across as a committed councillor.
However, I must take issue with his defence of the Liberal Democrat position on the Local Plan. They may not have a ‘reverse’ gear, but they could act to mitigate the worst impacts of the Plan, such as revising the housing numbers, so artificially inflated by the previous Tory regime.
