Anne Milton MP was up early this morning to speak to an audience of Guildford business men and women.

She spoke at the 6.30 am early breakfast meeting of BNI (Business Networking International) about the importance of helping young people get a foot on the employment ladder through apprenticeships, internships and work experience and the apparent resilience of much of the retail sector in Guildford.

She said: “Guildford High Street had a healthy Christmas despite the uncertain economic times which are of a different nature to those faced in previous recessions.”

She also spoke on the importance of a healthy work force: “A healthy work force, it has been shown, is a more effective workforce.”

Then, mindful that two later speakers from the cancer charities, GUTS and BRIGHT would be speaking on bowel and colon cancer, she reminded the audience, with her ex nurses hat firmly on, that: “We should all be aware of what was going on in our pants and knickers. We don’t like to talk about it but it is very important from a health point of view.”

Messages given, Ms Milton then rushed off for her days work in parliament leaving the Guildford chapter of BNI UK, to hold its weekly meeting. The Guildford chapter is currently ranked as the highest achieving of all 15 chapters within Surrey. The aim of their meetings is to increase their contact networks and, through the networks, obtain new business.

Russ McKenzie who chaired the meeting said: ”It was extremely gratifying to hear Anne’s congratulations on the achievements of BNI Business.

“As a group we commit to meet every Thursday morning to exchange ideas and quality referrals. In the  last twelve months this has led to more than £1million in new business and is testimony to the strength of our network. Our target now is to double that amount in the next year.

“We welcome businesses of all sizes to our meetings from sole traders to companies with very substantial turnovers, the one thing that we all have in common is a desire to succeed”

Those wishing to join BNI or attend a meeting as a visitor should contact the Chapter Director, Russ McKenzie on 07919 554662 or e-mail him on r.mckenzie@ntrustsystems.co.uk.
