East Horsley WI’s president was delighted to be presented with a framed certificate signed by Janice Langley, chair of the National Federation of WIs, commemorating East Horsley’s 50th anniversary.

East Horsley is one of five Surrey WIs to have reached 50 years. The first WI in East Horsley owed its inspiration to Agnes Conisbee and was formed in 1919. This was an afternoon institute.

By 1966 it had such a long waiting list that the East Horsley evening institute was founded. Sadly there is no longer an afternoon group but the evening group is still flourishing with monthly meetings in the village hall and numerous other activities.

The March meeting included a demonstration by Janet Gale, a painter and potter and an active member of the Farnborough Craft Guild. She exhibits in Surrey and Hampshire.

Her aim was to pass on her own enthusiasm for water-colours and to convince us that anyone can learn to paint even if they can’t draw.

Janet asked how many members would like to paint, but had never tried and chose one to be her student

She worked at an easel with the “student” working by her side.

In the intervals needed to allow the paint to dry, Janet talked about how she had developed her own career as a painter and potter.

She explained the techniques of water-colour painting, the choice of colours and the different brushes and paper available.

The finished painting was a beach scene with a boat. Members were full of admiration for Janet’s painting and for that produced by our member at her first attempt.

Our next meeting, on Wednesday, April 20, at 8pm in East Horsley Village Hall includes a talk ”Move over Jimmy Choo” by Marsha Hall.

Visitors and new members are very welcome. For more details ring 01483 285145.
