An elderly Guildford woman was left shaken today after two men took advantage of the snowy conditions to con their way into her house and take jewellery and alcohol. The two men claimed to want to help her by clearing snow.
The incident took place between 10am and 11.30am today, Friday, January 18 at an address in the Chertsey Street area when the victim, a woman in her 90s, was approached by the men asking if they could help her by clearing the snow from her path.
The men then entered her property and took three pearl necklaces, a gold rope design necklace and a bottle of brandy before leaving.
Surrey Police is reminding members of the public to look out for vulnerable relatives and neighbours during the cold weather.
Investigating officer Detective Constable Andrew Greaves from Guildford CID, said: “Crime of this nature against our elderly and most vulnerable members of our community is inexcusable and simply will not be tolerated by Surrey Police.
“The victim has been left deeply shaken and upset by the ordeal and I would urge anyone with information to contact officers as we need to find those responsible and bring them to justice.”
Both men are described as white and one was wearing a fur hat and a parka style jacket.
Anyone who witnessed anything suspicious in the area around the time of the incident or who has been offered items for sale which match the description of those taken is urged to contact Surrey Police on 101 quoting reference GD/13/452 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
