Family Classics Concert At G Live – Under 18s FREE

Guildford’s own professional chamber orchestra, Southern Pro Musica, is delighted to be returning to G Live for its popular Family Classics event.

The afternoon’s interactive family entertainment will take place on Sunday, February 25 from 1pm.

There will be free hands-on musical workshops led by Southern Pro Musica musicians in which children can try out all kinds of orchestral instruments, including woodwind, brass and strings. Participants will also be able to join in with a percussion ensemble.

Following this, there will be an hour-long concert in which the full Southern Pro Musica orchestra will play some of classical music’s most exciting pieces, conducted and compèred by SPM’s artistic director, Jonathan Willcocks.

The programme will include Rossini’s Overture William Tell, Morricone’s haunting The Mission film score Gabriel’s Oboe, the musical story Tubby the Tuba and Johann Strauss’s ever-popular Thunder and Lightning Polka.

Irresistible will be the foot-tapping Lord of the Dance, music made famous by Michael Flatley and there’ll also be some samba music and a song for the whole audience to join in with.

The orchestra will be partnered for some items by young musicians from St Thomas of Canterbury, Sandfield, Bushy Hill and Guildford High School Junior.

Southern Pro Musica has, since 2013, been Guildford Borough Council’s “principal provider of classical music”. Family Classics forms part of the Music for Guildford 2017-18 season.

Southern Pro Musica has established an outstanding reputation in the past 26 years as the south’s leading professional chamber orchestra, with seasons of concerts and broader education work in Chichester, Dorking, Petersfield, Portsmouth, Southampton, Winchester and Worthing as well as in Guildford.

An important feature of all Southern Pro Musica’s public concerts in the Music for Guildford season is free access to all those aged 18 and under, to inspire and nurture the next generation of music-lovers.

The annual Family Classics event is perfect entertainment for the whole family and has become well-established in the Guildford classical music calendar.
