Traveller caravan on Ripley Common

Visitors to Ripley Farmers’ Market were disrupted today (Saturday, August 11) because a Traveller family had moved onto the common.

A young male member of the Irish Traveller family said that they had tried to get onto the local camping site at East Horsley but had been refused because of his works van. He explained that he would move off after his grandfather’s funeral.

Michael Connors’ death was reported in The Guildford Dragon last week. The funeral is expected to take place early next week. But the location has not yet been circulated to the Traveller community.

Concerned that more Travellers might arrive Ripley Parish Council closed the usual car park on the common and visitors to the market had to park where they could.
