Cyclist Terry Duckmanton has begun his free training with his first four pupils all keen to learn good skills when riding their bikes on local roads.
His first session with them took place on Sunday, February 22, in not ideal weather conditions, as it was cold and wet. However, they persevered and made good progress.
Their second session on Sunday, March 1, saw much better weather, with Terry guiding them through the correct procedures of turning in and out of road junctions.
In our previous story about Terry’s offer to cyclists he said: “What I can offer is training to a group of five or six people [at one time] in the Westborough area of Guildford. If you live within walking or cycling distance of the Co-op shop on Aldershot Road, then you could be one of them. The offer is open to everyone living in this area, if you would like to be able to cycle into town and back on your own – after suitable training of course.”
On Sunday, the four taking part said they enjoyed the first week and were looking forward to progressing with the skills Terry is teaching them and hope to gain enough confidence on their bikes to cycle into Guildford town and back.
Terry has set up a new website all about his offer to teach people road cycling skills.
He said: “The new site goes by the name of Westborough Cycle Training Scheme (I do love snappy names) and has the advantages of being both interactive and free.
“I have now set up a proper web log or ‘blog’ as they are known, a calendar and a discussion area which will allow members of Westborough CTS to interact with each other and with people registered as users of the Surrey Community system. Discussion topics will all be cycling related of course.”

The group shown above have now completed their third session of training which consisted mostly of cycling round the Rydes Hill roundabout and on the surrounding roads.
Aldershot Road was quite busy and the trainees had to work hard to put together everything they had been told in order to get round safely. They coped magnificently with a situation that just a few weeks ago they would not have considered possible.
The promised target of a ride into Guildford town centre is getting closer, I can almost taste the tea and cake.
