Guildford Cathedral keeps up its musical traditions with free monthly coffee concerts.
Its 2024 series starts this coming Thursday morning, February 8.
Talented and highly regarded performers from the local area have been inspiring visitors, staff, and volunteers alike with a varied programme of music since the concerts started as part of the People’s Cathedral Project in 2015.
The cathedral says: “As we enter our ninth year, we are delighted to be welcoming some familiar faces and some new ones too.”
The free coffee concerts see people from all generations come together to enjoy the concert series. The performers give their time generously to enable the cathedral to provide a much-needed activity for many in its community.
The free concerts take place once a month on a Thursday with coffee in the cathedral from 10.30am and music from 11.15am to noon.
This coming Thursday, February 8, the cathedral welcomes back the talented Rhythm Of Life Community Choir, a Park Barn-based choir, with some members from further afield.
They will be singing a programme of old favourites and some new numbers as well.
Its choir master is Karen Taylor, who came to Guildford to study music at the University of Surrey – and stayed; and its guitarist (and singer too) is David Rose, perhaps better known as a local historian, writer and speaker!
The cathedral’s visitor experience officer, Mary Beal, said: “We have such a wide audience that come to our concerts, from school children to residents from local care homes and members of the public. It is such a joy to see the pleasure on our visitors’ faces once they have been to a concert.”
Everyone is welcome to attend and with free parking and Seasons Café on site serving delicious lunches and refreshments, and also the gift shop, it certainly makes for a pleasurable morning outing.
The cathedral is very grateful for the Borrows Charitable Trust for its sponsorship of the coffee concerts.
