The nominated candidates for the Guildford constituency have been confirmed by Guildford Borough Council.
They are: Zoe Franklin (Liberal Democrat), Anne Milton (Independent), John Morris (The Peace Party – Non-violence, Justice, Environment), Angela Richardson (Conservative) and Anne Rouse (Labour).
The published nomination list shows that supporters of Anne Milton include Conservative Party members. It is understood that by nominating a non-Conservative candidate they could face disciplinary action from the Party.
Angela Richardson’s proposer is Matt Furniss, long regarded by many as a protege of Anne Milton with ambitions to be an MP himself. Mr Furniss, the deputy chairman (political) of Guildford Conservative Association was defeated in the borough council election in May as a ward councillor for Christchurch. He remains the Conservative county councillor for Shalford.
The proposer of Anne Rouse, the Labour candidate, is Howard Smith the 2017 Labour candidate who increased the Labour share of the vote to within a few percentage points of the Lib Dems.
Lib Dem’s candidate Zoe Franklin’s proposer Cengiz Jan Harwood has quickly risen to be one of the most powerful figures in GBC following his election as a borough councillor for Merrow.
The deadline for applying to register for voting in the Parliamentary General Election is Tuesday 26 November.
Those not already registered in the borough – or who have moved house within the borough – can register online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.
Alternatively request a voter registration form by emailing: electoralservices@guildford.
