Over 750 free trees are to handed out to residents by Surrey County Council next week, as tree giveaway events return to Surrey’s libraries, including Guildford.
The giveaway, next Saturday (February 7) is part of the county council’s tree strategy which launched in 2019 and saw the council pledge to facilitate the planting of 1.2 million trees, one for every resident in Surrey, by 2030.
In addition to Guildford Library, at 9.30am – 12 noon, the following libraries are giving away trees will be given away on a first-come, first-served basis: Bansted; Byfleet; Egham; Ewell Court, Redhill and Virginia Water.
The trees are native, broad-leaved species and come with a stake and guard, ready for planting at home. A leaflet containing
Marisa Heath, Surrey County Council Cabinet Member for Environment and Planning, said: “Our tree giveaways are always popular events and are a great opportunity for residents to be part of a Surrey legacy while tackling the impact of climate change and improving biodiversity.
“Since our pledge in 2019, 768,332 trees have been planted and we couldn’t have done this without the ongoing support from schools, communities, businesses and residents, and of course the volunteers who have helped with the planting itself.”
