Guildford County School has been awarded a multi-million-pound government Condition Improvement Fund (CIF) to help fund construction of its new ‘sports hub’. The grant was described by the school as a “great leap forward” for its plans.
Combined with money raised so far, the school has now secured more than £3.4 million in funding for the proposed £3.9 million facility, which is intended to replace the school’s aged sports hall and provide a new sports space for students and the community.
The school is now aiming to fill a funding gap of £450,000 by the end of the year, to have the facilities complete by 2020.
Head Teacher Jack Mayhew said: “We’re delighted that the government recognised our urgent need and the opportunity to provide an affordable, city-centre sports space for our community. We are so close to achieving our sports hub dream – just £450, 000 would now make this great facility a reality.
“We’re working hard to raise these remaining funds, and are appealing to our community, sports clubs and local businesses to help us go this last mile!”
The project received planning permission in August 2017, as well as plans to build a new multi-use games area at the school, now under construction.
The school is encouraging the Guildford community to help raise funds through corporate sponsorships, individual donations, fundraising, and a ‘buy a brick’ campaign, in which individuals who make £50 donations will be recognised in a formal donor book in the new building.
Donations can be made on the school’s BTMyDonate page here: https://mydonate.bt.com/
