The Guildford Area u3a (also known as the University of the Third Age) is an educational self-help organisation aimed at anyone who is retired or no longer working full-time, or who has some free time on weekdays.
It draws on the wealth of knowledge and experience of its members to set up study groups and common interest groups and to organise recreational activities.
Gu3a has more than 110 groups, covering a broad range of activities including arts and crafts, languages, literature, music, history, science, games, walks and coach trips.
New groups include bird watching, psychology, intermediate recorder and church bell ringing.
There is currently a new year membership offer to new members who wish to join at this time of year rather than waiting until the start of the next full year in September.
The offer is for up to 20 months’ membership, running from January 1, 2024, to August 31, 2025, at a cost of £50.
This compares with the usual rate of £30 for a year’s membership.
This offer will run into March, when it becomes more advantageous for a new member to wait until enrolment opens for 2024-2025, probably on May 1.
A spokesperson said: “As we move towards our 40th anniversary in 2025, we reflect on how we have grown over the years as an organisation and our plans for the future.
“We are constantly looking for new opportunities to introduce new groups for our members’ enjoyment and are keen to find potential new members who have time on their hands and would be prepared to act as group leaders and introduce new aspects to our offerings.
