This July Guildfordians can stay at home to enjoy an Edinburgh-style Arts festival as the town’s first ‘Fringe’ plays for the whole month.
The event will initially run from the back room of the Star Inn on Quarry Street, but the plan is for it to be multi-venue.
Arts lovers wanting a taste of Guildford’s first Fringe Festival should head to the town centre this Saturday where the organisers have teamed up with the Best of Guildford’s “Buy Local” initiative to publicise the event.
Director Nick Wyschna said: “What has Edinburgh got that Guildford hasn’t? Not a lot. It’s beautiful, so is Guildford. It’s historic, so is Guildford. It rains a lot, so does Guildford. It has a fringe festival that runs every year… so does Guildford.”
“The Guildford Fringe team are aiming for it to become the place organisations bring their work before heading to Edinburgh in August.
“This year half the acts are from Guildford and half from places like London. We’re lucky to have so many professional theatre companies in the town.”
The month will include professional theatre, cabarets, stand-up, quiz nights, comedy speakers, jazz, debates and musical theatre produced by some of the most up and coming companies around.
Guildford Fringe Festival is the most recent addition to the already bustling theatre and arts scene in Guildford. Other festivals include literary, music and the Summer Festival. Organisers say that the Fringe Festival wants to add something different to the mix.
