The pandemic has forced many people to consider a healthier lifestyle, shown by a huge increase in those exercising over the summer to relieve the stresses of lockdown.
Now, with new restrictions continuing, the government is urging us to keep up our fitness regimes and sports. Winter’s darker nights and colder weather make these difficult to maintain but Guildford’s leisure centre provides a safe indoor space for those who want to keep fit.
Cllr James Steel, lead for the Environment, said: “Keeping fit, active and healthy is so important for us all and connecting with others for sport benefits not only our physical health, but our mental health too.

“We are lucky to have such a variety of activities offered by the Spectrum and Ash Manor and we know how much we all missed them during the first months of the pandemic. The swimming pool is now open along with the gym, group exercise classes and indoor sports activities, including badminton and the athletics track.

“The bowling centre and ice rink are also all now open at the Spectrum. Thank you to all the staff involved for their hard work in making the centres safe and Covid-secure for you, with social distancing measures and cleaning procedures to ensure staff and residents are kept safe.”
Since reopening, the leisure centres operated in partnership with Guildford Borough Council, have warmly welcomed visitors. Social distancing and safety measures offer peace of mind. The trained centre staff understand the importance of supporting visitors.
Leisure centres also provide a valuable opportunity for companionship, to be around people during times of social restriction.
Ivan Horsfall Turner, Freedom Leisure managing director, said: “As we approach the winter months, that people have safe spaces in which to exercise and socialise is vital. We have a variety of activity options and a friendly team to help everyone feel confident in using their local leisure centre to support a healthy lifestyle.”
