As the Guildford Shakespeare Company’s acclaimed All’s Well That Ends Well transfers to London, the company’s sights are turning to 2020: its 14th year of locally made, locally played professional theatre.
Booking is now open for Macbeth, Shakespeare’s super-charged thriller and one of the best-loved plays of all time. This brand-new production, directed by Charlotte Conquest and designed by Neil Irish, will be staged at Holy Trinity Church from February 8-29.
Next summer, the annual open-air season begins with Oliver Goldsmith’s Georgian comedy of manners She Stoops to Conquer. This romantic romp of mistaken identities and ludicrous mischief will be staged in the Castle Gardens from June 10-25.
Known for its inspired use of an array of local venues, the GSC makes its first foray to Gosden House in Bramley for As You Like It, arguably Shakespeare’s happiest comedy (July 11-27). Here, the beautiful walled garden and orchards will provide the perfect setting for the enchanting Forest of Arden in a play last staged by the GSC in 2013.
In April, the company will celebrate the bard’s birthday with the GSC Young Company’s production (April 19-20), the 9th Sonnet Walk Weekend (April 25-26) and, on the birthday itself, a special staged reading of the epic love story Troilus & Cressida (April 23), set against the backdrop of the Trojan War.
Macbeth tickets are on sale at www.guildford-shakespeare-company.co.uk or Box Office, tel. 01483 304384. All’s Well That Ends Well runs at the Jermyn Street Theatre, off Piccadilly, until November 30.
